Here is my analysis and response to a few questions about the editing that has been used in two films:
Babe
QUESTIONS:
1. What is the duration (timing) of the sequence?
It is 2:55 minutes long and has 36 cuts.
2. How does the pace affect the audience’s engagement?
The pace is quite slow at the start and due to this, it makes the audience prone to less engagement, but there are many cuts as the dramatic tension is high when the gate is being shut which contrasts with the previous pace and makes this particular moment stand out even more and makes the audience very engaged, as this is the moment they've been waiting for. The dramatic contrast in the pace of the start vs the moment h
3. Why do you think the filmmakers chose to present this scene in this way?
It's the end of the film, adds an uplifting effect to the end and creates a lasting impression for the audience.
Leon
QUESTION:
1. What type of editing techniques has the director, Luc Besson, used?
He uses principally cuts, fade in/fade out black, clean editing, used pace rather than editing techniques (cuts), cuts to a canted angle (something wrong happening), pace of editing builds drama, lift numbers = cutting reversing & getting closer every time (builds anticipation) - see actor then see what actor is looking at, director changes pace, very gentle introduction to the world of the film, everything after that forces us to feel emotion, director makes audience look at exactly he wants them to look at and directs audiences emotion, cuts exaggerate all of the tension, works with the soundtrack and adds info (e.g. panting), camera behind him sets up tension = POV of Leon
