Syncopy
Institution: Syncopy Inc. is a production company founded by English-American filmmaker Christopher Nolan and his wife, English film producer Emma Thomas. It was founded on February 27, 2001 and the company was founded after Nolan had established himself as a filmmaker with the psychological film, Memento. The majority of Syncopy's productions have been distributed by Warner Bros. The first film Syncopy officially made was Batman begins in 2005.
Genre & Narrative: Syncopy tends to make thriller their main genre (sci-fi is a very large genre for syncopy too). For example; Interstellar = Science fiction, Tennet = Science fiction action-thriller, Oppenheimer = Thriller.
Image: Syncopy only has four employees (including Nolan and Thomas). It is a relatively new company and has no merchandise. It is privately owned. Nolan already had success before the company and was well-known, so people have trust in the films he produces with the company.
Logo: The name of the company is a play on the word syncopation and was suggested to Nolan by his father, who was a classical music fan. The logo shows a maze, made with individual white lines, whilst the word 'Syncopy' is much bolder than the rest of the logo, making the word stand out the most. The logo is on a black background and the contrast of the white on the black (use of negative and positive space) makes it stand out more. The use of the maze as a signifier, signifies the complex plots that Syncopy has.
BBC iPlayer
Institution: The original BBC iPlayer service was launched in October 2005, undergoing a five-month trial until 28 February 2006. The iPlayer received the approval of the BBC Trust on 30 April. Then in December 2007, BBC iPlayer launched fully. BBC iPlayer is a branch from BBC which originated as a radio broadcasting company formed by a group of wireless radio manufacturers, including Guglielmo Marconi, in 1922. The British Government licensed the company through the General Post Office. The BBC began its television programming from the basement of Broadcasting House, London, in 1932. The first televised news bulletins were broadcast from Alexandra Palace in London in 1954.
Genre & Narrative: BBC has as mixture of genres (not really a specific one), but BBC iPlayer is very useful for finding non-fictional film documentaries e.g. Planet Earth and so that makes it stand out. Lot's of dramas are on BBC iPlayer.
Image: The BBC brand is huge (iPlayer is only a branch from it). It is recognised worldwide for their programmes and broadcasting. The BBC name and visual identity are critical to sustaining this recognition. The BBC has lots of merch e.g. mugs and t-shirts, to show its logo (very recognisable).
Logo: BBC is an acronym meaning is British Broadcasting Corporation, which is the public service broadcaster of the United Kingdom. It is called iPlayer because the word makes up ‘I’ and ‘Play’ which shows how the user can play anything they want no matter the time, for example if they miss a live show, they can watch in (not in live time) as catch up on iPlayer. The BBC logo is made out of three squares (solid) with the contrasting colour in a thin lettering (capital) making BBC. It's short and very bold and appears everywhere. The iPlayer is in pink lettering (contrast) and has a small play button (signifier) on the left of it which signifies the act of watching a video.
LIONSGATE
Institution: Lions Gate Entertainment Corporation was made in 1997 by Frank Giustra, who was a banker. He purchased Cinépix and it renamed Lions Gate Films on January 13, 1998. Lionsgate also purchased North Shore Studios, which became Lions Gate Studios.
Genre & Narrative: Lionsgate usually has a mixture of genres used but they tend to do a lot of dramas, for example Wonder = family-drama, Lala Land = Romantic comedy-drama. They have a very large range of genres used in their production and they normally follow a singular main character (traditionally Props character theory used).
Image: Lionsgate makes it easy to buy their merchandise as they have it for a lot of their successful Lionsgate Official Shop | Lionsgate Merchandise – Lionsgate Shop. They have a very well-known logo and reputation.
Name: Lionsgate is a corporation organized under the Province of British Columbia, resulting from the merger of Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. and Beringer Gold Corp. on November 13, 1997. Their logo consists on bold blue text on a background of the sky (with clouds in them). The sun shines through on the background, which makes the lettering stand out and be emphasised. The use of the signifiers of the sky (sun and clouds) and the word gate, could signify the religious image of Heaven.
