The script – I interpretated the script as an integration scene, where there was a detective and a criminal. I wanted there to be underlying suspicion for the detective as well, hinting to a narrative where maybe the two were working together, but I’m not sure if that was shown correctly. “Have you fed the fish” was supposed to be code and was supposed to create enigma codes for the audience as it seemed like an inside message between the detective and criminal. It was meant to be a tense scene where the audience is confused and wants to find out more.
The team – In the group I had Sofi, Maisie, Amelie, as well as myself. Whilst we took turns playing around with the camera, just to get a feel for it, those who were working behind the camera were primarily Maisie and Sofi, as me and Amelie were in front of the camera. Sofi was mainly in charge of the lighting and Maisie the filming, but everyone took turns. Amelie played the part of the detective who walked in and interrogated me (the criminal). Throughout the filming all of us put forwards our ideas and we directed the film as a group rather than one single person. We would often debate ideas and vote on how we wanted specific clips to be, whilst under a short amount of time.
What worked (filming) – I think the good lighting that we used from the photography room worked well, as we had the bright light on me, to add the accusatory setting that an interrogation room needs, and we had Amelie in the shadows, adding a lot of mystery to her character. We communicated pretty well and made sure everyone had a chance to say what they thought would work best.
What went wrong (and how we fixed it) – Whilst filming, we go the script muddled up and confused person A and person B’s lines, but since we had little time to finish, we just continued and tried to correct lines and tried to make it work with the scene. We didn’t use a large range of camera shots; they were mostly close-up/ medium close-up shots and I think that made the sequence a little robotic and I wish we use a bigger variety e.g., over the shoulder shots/ canted shots. The acting was a bit dull (especially from me) but none of us excel in acting, so I feel like with maybe some drama students, it would look better.
What cinematic, auditory and editing things have I learnt from this project – I’ve learnt that a range of shot types make a film sequence much less mechanical and that music can completely change the tone of a film as before adding the non-diegetic sound it was quite bland, but I felt it was much more dramatized after adding the music. I learnt to never put the non-diegetic sound on the same track as the diegetic sound because when I did this, I couldn’t hear the characters’ voices anymore and it meant I had to reverse a lot, which wasted time. I learnt a lot about the tracks while editing and I learnt that the outside tracks will overlap anything. I’ve never used Adobe Premiere Pro before and I learnt many things like colour correction, adding a title and using cuts/fades.
